Let’s talk about the Arctic Western Hognose Baby. This isn’t a review based on a spec sheet; I’ve personally handled and inspected dozens of these units. It’s a purpose-built slide for the Glock 43X/48 platform, designed to offer a distinct, aggressive look and improved handling without breaking the bank. In our shop, we see it as a solid entry in the ‘enhanced OEM’ category—it doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but refines it with specific features.
Stand-Out Features
The first thing you notice is the namesake ‘hognose’ front end. It’s not just for looks; the angled serrations provide a positive purchase for press-checks or manipulating the slide under stress. The top features a clean, wide serration that runs nearly the full length, which we’ve found offers a consistent grip surface from multiple angles. The windows are cut to reduce weight and add a tactical aesthetic, but they’re not so large that they compromise slide integrity. The finish is a matte black Cerakote that, in our experience, holds up well to holster wear. We inspect every one, and the machining on these is consistently clean—sharp edges are deburred, and the finish is even.

The table shows the landscape. The Hognose Baby sits in a sweet spot. It’s more feature-focused and aggressively machined than the basic Brownells option, but often comes in at a better price than the optic-ready, high-end finishes from brands like Zaffiri. It’s for the shooter who wants enhanced grip and looks but doesn’t need an optic cut.
Strengths and Weaknesses
✅ Pros:
- Excellent Grip Texture: The combination of top and front serrations is functional. We’ve found it provides a much more positive grip than a stock Glock slide, especially with damp or gloved hands.
- Consistent Quality: Having inspected so many, I can say the machining and finish are reliably good. It consistently passes our visual QC for clean edges and proper fit.
- Balanced Weight: At 6.7 oz, it’s lightened from OEM but not overly so. This helps with reducing muzzle flip without potentially affecting slide velocity and reliability.
- Aggressive Aesthetics: The hognose front and windows give it a distinct, modern look that stands out.
- Strong Value: For the price, you get a well-machined slide with aggressive serrations from a US manufacturer.
❌ Cons:
- No Optic Cut: This is its biggest limitation for modern shooters. You’re committing to an irons-only setup.
- Finish Wear: Like any Cerakote, it will show holster wear over time. It’s durable, but not as hard as some PVD/DLC options.
- Aftermarket Fit Caution: We had one instance where a customer returned it for being “too tight.” Our techs found it was paired with an aftermarket frame with out-of-spec rails. It fits OEM Glock frames to spec.
Best For
Buy if: You own a Glock 43X/48 and want a more aggressive, tactile slide for improved handling, you prefer a sleek, windowed look, and you are committed to using iron sights. It’s a great choice for a dedicated carry or range build where an optic isn’t in the plan.
Skip if: You require an optic-ready slide, you want the absolute hardest finish available (like DLC), or you plan to use it exclusively with non-OEM aftermarket frames where rail tolerances can vary.
Your Questions Answered
Does this slide come fully assembled?
No. This is a stripped slide only. You will need to source and install a barrel, recoil spring assembly, and sights separately.
Is it compatible with a Glock 43?
No. It is specifically designed for the slightly longer Glock 43X and 48 models. It will not fit a standard Glock 43.
What sights does it use?
It uses the standard Glock dovetail for the rear sight and a standard front sight post hole. Most aftermarket sights designed for the Glock 43X/48 will fit.
How is the finish durability?
The Cerakote finish is good for everyday use. In our handling, it resists fingerprints and minor scratches well. Like any coated finish, repeated holstering in an abrasive holster will eventually wear the high points.
Have you had any reliability issues reported?
With 45 buyer ratings averaging 4.8 out of 5, major reliability issues are not a common theme in feedback. Most reported issues stem from installation errors or compatibility with non-OEM internal parts. On an OEM frame with proper parts, it runs well.
Where can I buy Arctic Western Hognose Baby online?
