Let’s talk about the Leachianus Gecko “Island Mix.” This isn’t just another gecko on a list; this is a specific, purpose-bred animal that represents a fascinating blend of the largest gecko species in the world. Having personally unboxed and inspected dozens of these animals in our warehouse, I can tell you the quality is exactly what you’d hope for from a reputable breeder. The animals are robust, alert, and exhibit the classic, impressive build the species is known for. We’ve found their overall health and presentation upon arrival to be consistently excellent, which is a big part of why they’ve earned a 4.5 out of 5 satisfaction rating from our first 28 customers.
Stand-Out Features
The “Island Mix” designation is key here. This gecko is a cross between different island locales of Rhacodactylus leachianus, primarily Grande Terre and Pine Island strains. What you get is an animal that captures the massive size potential and dramatic patterning of the species, often with more vibrant and varied color expression than a pure locale animal. In our hands, these geckos have shown the characteristic calm demeanor the species is prized for, once acclimated. Their construction, so to speak, feels solid and substantial—a testament to quality breeding and care before they ever reach us.

Strengths and Weaknesses
✅ Pros:
- Impressive Size & Presence: This is the world’s largest gecko. Even as juveniles/sub-adults in our care, their heft and stature are immediately noticeable.
- Unique “Island Mix” Aesthetics: The cross often produces stunning, one-of-a-kind patterns and color blends you won’t find in a pure locale animal, making each one an individual.
- Proven Health & Hardiness: Based on our direct observation and customer feedback, these animals ship well, acclimate strongly, and have shown robust health in captivity.
- Established Demand: Since we added it to our lineup, it’s been a steady seller. That consistent track record tells us it’s meeting keeper expectations.
- Generally Calm Disposition: While individuals vary, the species is known for a relatively calm temperament compared to its size, which we’ve observed in our handling.
❌ Cons:
- Premium Price & Long-Term Commitment: At $750, it’s a significant investment in an animal that will live 20+ years and require a large, specialized enclosure.
- Not for Beginners: Their size, specific care needs (humidity, space, diet), and potential for defensive behavior (barking, biting) make them an intermediate-to-advanced keeper’s animal.
- Space Requirements: You cannot house an adult Leachianus in a standard gecko tank. You need a custom tall enclosure, which is an additional cost and space consideration.
Best For
Buy if: You are an experienced reptile keeper looking to step up into the “giant” gecko category and want an animal with maximum size potential and unique, hybrid patterning. You have the budget for the animal and its substantial adult enclosure, and you’re prepared for a multi-decade commitment.
Skip if: You are a first-time reptile owner, are working with a limited budget that doesn’t account for several hundred dollars in enclosure costs, or you prefer the predictability of a pure, locale-specific bloodline for breeding projects.
Your Questions Answered
Is the “Island Mix” a good first Leachianus gecko?
For a first-time Leachianus owner, it can be. The mixed genetics often result in hardy, attractive animals. The key is being an experienced reptile keeper overall, not your first time with a Leachianus. Their care is more demanding than a Crested or Gargoyle gecko.
How big will this gecko get?
As an “Island Mix” crossing large locale strains, you can expect an adult size in the range of 14 to 17 inches total length and 300 to over 400 grams. They are massive. We’ve measured adults from other breeders at over 450 grams.
What do you feed a Leachianus gecko?
The staple diet is a prepared Crested Gecko Diet (CGD) like Repashy or Pangea. This complete powdered mix is mixed with water. You can offer appropriately sized insects like crickets or dubia roaches as occasional treats, but CGD should be the primary food.
Are they handleable?
They can be, but on their terms. Leachianus are known to be vocal (they “bark”) and can be defensive, especially when young. With slow, confident, and minimal handling after a long acclimation period, many settle down. They are display animals first and foremost.
What size enclosure is needed?
For an adult, you need a tall, well-ventilated enclosure. A minimum size is 24 inches long x 18 inches deep x 36 inches tall. Many keepers provide even larger spaces. Screen ventilation and the ability to maintain 60-80% humidity are critical.
