Description

The Albino Pink Belly Side Neck Turtle is a distinctive captive-bred reptile for intermediate to advanced keepers seeking a unique, active aquatic turtle. Its striking lack of pigmentation and vibrant pink underside make it a standout display animal. Since we began carrying it in summer 2025, it has consistently ranked among our most reordered live animals, with many customers returning for a second.

Stand-Out Features

  • Vibrant Coloration: True albinism results in bright red eyes and a shell and skin devoid of dark pigment, allowing the underlying pink and yellow hues to shine.
  • Active Personality: Unlike some basking turtles, these are almost constantly in motion, foraging and exploring their aquatic environment.
  • Unique Neck Retraction: As a “side-neck” species (Pleurodira), it folds its head sideways under the shell edge rather than pulling it straight back, a fascinating behavioral trait.
  • Robust Captive-Bred Line: Ours are captive-bred, which supports conservation and results in a hardier, more adaptable animal than wild-caught specimens.
  • Manageable Adult Size: Reaches a carapace length of 8-10 inches as an adult, requiring a substantial but not excessively large aquarium (75+ gallons).

Your Questions Answered

What setup do you recommend for this turtle?

A 40-gallon breeder tank is the absolute minimum for a juvenile, with a 75-gallon or larger aquarium necessary for an adult. Provide a powerful canister filter, a basking area with UVB and heat lamps (maintaining a basking spot of 90-95°F), and water deep enough for full swimming and turning. They are not suitable for small, shallow habitats.

Is it normal for them to be shy at first?

Yes. Upon arrival and introduction to a new environment, they may be reclusive. Given a proper setup with hiding spots and clean, warm water, they typically become bold and visible within a week, showing their characteristically active foraging behavior.

Why do customers often buy a second one?

Their engaging behavior and striking appearance make them a rewarding display animal. Many keepers, after seeing the activity level and unique traits of their first turtle, choose to set up a larger, species-specific tank to house a small group, as they can be kept communally with adequate space.
