I would not recommend it as a first gecko. While they are hardy, Chahouas have specific humidity and dietary needs (including prepared diets and insects) that are more complex than a beginner species like a Leopard Gecko or Crested Gecko. They are best for keepers with some reptile experience.
How is the temperament?
In our experience, Pine Islands are typically calm for a Chahoua. Juveniles can be skittish, as with most geckos, but adults often settle into a manageable, observant demeanor. They are not typically “handle-every-day” pets but can become quite tolerant with slow, regular interaction.
