Stand-Out Features

This isn’t just another boa. The Sunglow morph combines two recessive traits—Albino and Hypomelanism—to produce an animal with virtually no black pigment. The result is a snake with intense, clean oranges, pinks, and yellows that seem to glow, especially under good lighting. In our hands, the color saturation on these babies is impressive right out of the box, and they only get better with age. We’ve found the build quality of the animals we receive matches what you’d expect from a reputable breeder focusing on this morph. Since we started carrying them in mid-2024, they’ve become a staple in our inventory because the demand is so consistent. Our reptile room staff has a standing note: we keep 20+ in stock at all times because backorders on an animal this popular are a real headache.

Strengths and Weaknesses

✅ Pros:

  • Exceptional Coloration: The “glow” in Sunglow is real. You’re getting two desirable color traits in one animal.
  • Proven Hardiness: Based on the 25 buyer reviews we’ve tracked (averaging 4.5/5), these are robust starters that acclimate well.
  • Predictable Growth: As a pure Colombian locality, you can expect a manageable, predictable adult size compared to some other subspecies.
  • Strong Feeding Response: In our quarantine period, we’ve found nearly every one takes frozen/thawed prey without issue, which is a huge plus for a new owner.
  • Established Popularity: This isn’t a flash-in-the-pan morph. Its long-standing appeal means proven genetics and reliable outcomes.

❌ Cons:

  • Price Premium: You pay more for the combined genetics. It’s a step up from a standard Albino or Hypo.
  • Light Sensitivity: Like all albino reptiles, their eyes are more sensitive to bright light. Their enclosure lighting needs to be managed thoughtfully.
  • Adult Size Consideration: While manageable, a 5-7 foot snake still requires a significant long-term commitment in space and care.

Best For

Buy if: You want a visually stunning, conversation-starting boa that showcases classic morph genetics. You’re looking for a hardy Colombian boa with a proven track record of good health and feeding. You understand the commitment of a large constrictor and are ready for a pet you’ll have for decades. You appreciate a morph that improves with age.

Skip if: Your budget is strictly for a “first snake” and you’re not ready for the premium of a double recessive morph. You are uncomfortable with the eventual size and strength of an adult boa constrictor. You were hoping for a snake that stays under 4 feet.

Your Questions Answered

How is the temperament of these baby Sunglow boas?

In our handling, they are typical for well-started Colombian boas: generally calm and curious. Babies can be a bit quick and defensive initially, but they settle down with regular, gentle handling. None of the animals we’ve shipped have been reported as nippy or problematic, which aligns with their 4.5/5 satisfaction score from our customers.

What do I need for a setup?

Start with a secure 20-30 gallon enclosure with a locking lid. You’ll need a heat gradient (88-90°F warm side, 78-80°F cool side) created by an overhead heat source or heat pad regulated by a thermostat, a humidity range of 60-70%, at least two snug hides, a water bowl large enough for soaking, and appropriate substrate like cypress mulch or coconut husk.

What do they eat and how often?

They are eating frozen/thawed rodent pups. Feed a meal roughly the size of the widest part of the snake’s body every 7-10 days for a baby. We send specific feeding records and recommendations with each animal.

Will the colors change as it grows?

Yes, and for the better. The orange and yellow tones typically intensify and clean up as the snake matures. The “Sunglow” name refers to this bright, clean adult appearance. You won’t get the muddying or browning that can occur in some other morphs.

Is this a good first boa?

It can be, if you’ve done your research on boa care. Colombians are known for their relatively predictable temperament and care requirements. The Sunglow itself is just as hardy as a normal Colombian. The main consideration is the higher initial cost.
