Your Questions Answered
What size enclosure does an adult need?
An adult requires a very large, custom enclosure, minimum 6’L x 3’W x 4’H. It must include a substantial water area deep enough for full submersion and swimming, along with sturdy branches for climbing and robust basking sites.
Are they handleable?
They are primarily display animals. While some individuals may tolerate brief, careful handling, they are naturally nervous and prone to sprinting or jumping. Taming requires significant, consistent effort. Their size and strength also make them a handful—literally.
What’s special about their care?
Their semi-aquatic need is paramount. You must maintain high humidity (70-80%) and provide a large, clean water source for daily soaking. They also require intense basking heat (115-120°F) and high-output UVB lighting across most of the enclosure to support their metabolism and bone health.
