Your Questions Answered
How is its temperament as a baby?
Neonates can be initially defensive, often musking or striking when first handled. This is normal behavior. With calm, consistent, and brief handling sessions 2-3 times a week, they typically calm down significantly within a few months.
What setup does it need?
A 10-gallon enclosure is suitable for a hatchling. Provide a secure hide, a small water dish, and aspen or similar substrate. A thermal gradient is essential: a warm side of 85-88°F and a cool side in the mid-70s°F, achieved with an under-tank heater regulated by a thermostat.
When will it turn completely black?
Hatchlings often show faint white or yellow chain-link patterning or spots. This pattern fades with each shed. Most specimens achieve their solid, glossy black adult coloration by 12-18 months of age.
