Not in our experience. The scaleless trait in ball pythons is a dominant genetic mutation affecting only the head scales. The animals we’ve handled and shipped have shown no increased susceptibility to injury or infection. Proper enclosure setup (smooth hides, no abrasive surfaces) is recommended, but they are not fragile.
How does the Lesser gene affect the color?
The Lesser (or Butter) gene reduces black pigment and brightens the overall animal. You get a clean, light base color (tan/cream/yellow) with high-contrast, blushed-out pattern markings. Combined with the scaleless head, it creates a very striking, smooth-faced animal.
Can it breed with a normal ball python?
