Your Questions Answered

Is this a good “first” lizard?

Not typically. While juveniles are manageable, Argentine Tegus grow very large, require significant space, specialized heating/lighting, and a varied diet. They are best for keepers with prior reptile experience who are prepared for the long-term commitment and costs associated with a giant lizard.

How is its temperament?

Argentine Tegus are renowned for their intelligence and capacity for tameness. This juvenile is alert and active. Consistent, calm interaction is key to developing a docile adult. Always respect its space, especially during feeding times.

What do I need to have ready?

You must have a proper enclosure set up before arrival. For a juvenile, start with a minimum 40-gallon breeder tank with secure lid, a high-output UVB light, a focused basking lamp creating a hot spot, a deep substrate for burrowing, a large water dish, and multiple hides. Plan for its eventual adult enclosure.
